“The shoulders of giants” -
piano concerto in c major

Album art by Tan Xiao Tong
A piano concerto for reduced orchestra; a piece about smallness.
Movement I, “Arise” is a meditation in C Major, the tonality of nature - an idea first championed in Sibelius’ monumental 7th Symphony and pushed to its limits in this movement. Movement II, “Climb” is a playfully awkward scherzo in the Lydian mode, representing the quaintness and liveliness of life - Movement III, “Soar” ends the concerto with a large-scale fugue, shamelessly and boldly, in the spirit of adventure.
